Preliminary task 4 school magazine covers analysis

The masthead of ‘The Civitas’ magazine stands out the most as it is in a bigger font than any other text on the front cover. It is also placed on a maroon background and it’s written in white which makes it more visible too. The white and maroon colours relate to the school theme and logo.
The front cover of this magazine doesn’t have much information or writing because the photo is colourful and shows a lot, which doesn’t give the need to write more. The children are holding charity buckets which clearly indicates the school wants to help people and also show their best side to the public and encourage to do the same.

The school called their magazine ‘The Civitas’ which stands for citizenship, especially as imparting shared responsibility, a common purpose, and sense of community. This designates that the school wanted to portrait their school as a great community and the topic ‘Citizens for change’ proves it.

Dave Grohl the singer/guitarist and the leader of the rock band ‘Foo Fighters’ is placed on the centre right of the magazine cover. The picture taken is medium shot at a low angle, he is bigger and more towards the front compared to his band members which clearly emphasises his position as a band ‘leader’. The band members are wearing mostly black and dark colours also grey and denim, which is typical for a rock band but still modern and casual rather than ‘KISS’ excessive style. The colour of their clothing also doesn’t distract the colours of the coverlines . The colour scheme of white, grey, black and red all contrast between each other which makes the cover clear to read and look at without confusion as all of these colours can work on top of each other. Question 6:  What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? During the process of constructing my magazine I came across many different technological platforms which were beneficial towards creating my final design.  I have used applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. I discovered that using these applications enhanced the quality of my work and created a more professional finish to my visual ideas. Within Photoshop I used a variety of different tools to tie my magazine piece together, one of the most significant tools I used was the  'Quick Selection'  tool. For this step I used YouTube to teach myself how to cut out my image neatly. It made it easier to cut around specific conventions such as my main image to create the unique double exposure effect, it created an authentic perspective for my magazine since all the big industries also use Photoshop. Analysing three magazine front covers

ANALYSING THREE FRONT COVERS OF A MAGAZINE The cover doesn’t have any writing, titles or information on it apart from his name and year of his birth and death which again, brings the focus on him. Robin Williams is positioned at the centre of the magazine, the camera and the whole front cover is focused on him. His head is in front of the masthead which makes him stand out even more. The date is placed in the right top corner in black on top of red with small font which doesn’t distract from the main thing.   The background is white which makes the red masthead and border more vivid and the black clothes more noticeable. Robin is wearing all black as you would at a funeral which brings more attention to the fact that he has died. Yet still Robin still looks happy and is smiling in the photo, which could associate with his acting life mostly as a comedian.
